| Desk by Greta Grossman for Glenn of California |
From her arrival in the early 1940's the Swedish born Greta Magnusson Grossman ran her own office and created lighting and furniture designs for at least a dozen companies. Her 1950's floor and table lamps for the Ralph O. Smith Company- one, a winner of the Museum of Modern Arts Good Design award- and her line of furniture for Glenn of California are premiere examples of her strengths as a designer. In her furniture designs Grossman combined wrought iron, walnut, cane and formica to create pieces with unique proportions and formal presence.
The collection exhibited here shows this group of California designers at their best-- drawing inspiration from the international community, utilizing their local resources and advancing the modern movement at home and abroad.
