Verner Panton created the Pantonaef series of modular toys for the Swiss manufacturer Naef in 1975. This system, based on only three different kinds of pieces, allowed one to create virtually any shape imaginable. Small square frames are clamped together and combined to form any desired shape. Square plates, available in a variety of colors, are then attached to the frame. Instructions were available for creating a variety of animal shapes and abstract forms, but the possibilities for creating different objects are endless.
